VG 5400 MICROMASS mass-spectrometer coupled to a line designed for step heating experiments and single grain argon laser probe dating
Description of the instrument:
Nier source mass-spectrometer equipped with a Faraday cup-type detector and an electron multiplier and ion counter for high-sensitivity measurements of all noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe). It is designed for high-precision measurements of rare gases in terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples. The mass-spectrometer is coupled to an automated gas extraction and purification line and equipped with 4 getters (2 GP10 and 2 GP50 operating at hot) to ensure that the gas introduced into the spectrometer is clean and free of active gas. The extraction of the gases from the samples is done either with a double-walled furnace cooled with water or with a C02 laser. This mass spectrometer and the preparation line are dedicated to the exclusive measurement of Argon isotopes.
Principle of Analysis:

Analysis achieved by the instrument:
40Ar / 39Ar dating of groundmass splits (Lavas)via step-heating experiments and 40Ar / 39Ar laser dating on single crystal (Potassic Feldspar, Micas, Amphiboles).
