Device description:
Several optical microscopes are available at GEOPS for petrogtraphy: 3 microscopes LEICA DM750P and one Olympus AH-2. These microscopes allow observations at variable maginfications including 25 (2,5 x 10) and 400 (40 x 10). These microscopes are connected to cameras.
Principle of the analyse:
The lecture proposed by Michel Dubois (University of Lille 1) on petrography and mineralogy represents a good introduction.

It is possible to determine the nature of minerals, texture, properties, … These observations are critical to determine a paragenesis and represent the first step for further analyses: scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, laser ablation ICP-MS, …
